Shona Sculpture has been called “the most important art form to emerge from Africa in the past century.” Although Shona sculpture in its current incarnation is a fairly recent artistic phenomena, the work expresses the ancestral spirit of Africa, the birth origin of all people.
The sculpture is created by the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe, who work with several beautiful stones including serpentine, verdite, opal, cobalt, springstone and granite. The sculptors use non-mechanical tools to shape the stone, whose hardness demands arduous work by the artists.
The artists say the spirits of their ancestors reside within the stone, and each artist’s work reveals that spirit.
Shona sculpture was featured at the recent Chapungu Exhibition at the Powell Gardens in 2008.
